Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens
Kirstenbosch is the gem of South African botanical gardens, named one of the Seven Magnificent Botanical Gardens of the world. Set in 528 hectares with a mountain backdrop, the gardens grow only indigenous plants - more than 8 500 species in all.

V&A Waterfront
The Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, South Africa's most-visited tourist attraction, is a mixed-use development on the Cape Town shoreline. It offers craft markets, top designer-label stores, coffee shops, cinema complexes and more, all set in the bustle and colour of a working harbour.

Cape Point
The Cape Peninsula points like a finger out into the ocean, forming the curve of False Bay, reaching its end in a remarkable wedge of rock known as Cape Point. The route there is through the rich fynbos of the Good Hope section of Table Mountain National Park, one of the world's biodiversity hotspots.

Boulders Beach Penguin Colony
Boulders Beach Penguin Colony in Simon's Town is home to one of the world's most famous, and accessible, penguin colonies. It's also the only National Park in the country to be found within a city. The population of 3 000 African penguins, descended from the two breeding pairs that moved there in 1982, are treated as honoured guests in the town. There's even a "penguin crossing" to allow them to cross Main Road in safety.

Table Mountain
Rising more than a kilometre above the city of Cape Town, the flat-topped sandstone Table Mountain is more than South Africa's most famous landmark. It also a National Park with astonishing biodiversity, with more plant species than the British Isles. On clear days the mountain is visible from 200 kilometres out to sea. You can get to the top in five minutes on the rotating cable car, or take one of the mountain's spectacularly beautiful hiking trails.

Robben Island
Lying 12 kilometres offshore in Table Bay, Robben Island has for centuries been a place of banishment and imprisonment for those opposed to colonial and, later, apartheid rule. Its most famous prisoner is Nelson Mandela, who spent a good part of his 27-year prison term on the island. Today Robben Island is a Unesco World Heritage site, visited by thousands of tourists every year.
