South African Experience – 18 April 2011
Built between 1666 and 1679 by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) as a maritime replenishment station, the Castle of Good Hope is the oldest surviving colonial building in South Africa.
From 1678 it was the centre of civilian, administrative and military life at the Cape, until the surrounding settlement grew and the governing functions and activities moved into the town.
Today the Castle is the headquarters of the military in the Cape, and houses the Military Museum and Iziko Museum within its ancient walls and has become one of the major tourist attractions for the city of Cape Town.
We are offering you the opportunity to experience this historical site at a unique event that will showcase the diverse cultures that have forged the rainbow nation.
From the indigenous African tribes to the settlers from Europe, Malaya and India; each has introduced their own culture into the mix that is now South Africa. On this evening you will sample the different culinary styles and experience the individual songs and dance that forged from a turbulent history that was developed into a uniquely South African style reflecting their original origins.
Within the walls of this mighty castle, with the magnificent Table Mountain towering as a backdrop, we guarantee an evening of South African hospitality presented our way, by our people, in our home.
